Love to watch and listen to these guys when we visit the areas that they live in. This guy happens to live in the Yankee Boy Basin near Ouray, Colorado. The people in Colorado also have another name for them....."Whistle Pigs" because of the sound they make.
The marmot is part of the ground squirrel family. Marmots typically live in burrows (often within rockpiles, particularly in the case of the yellow-bellied marmot, and hibernate there through the winter. Most marmots are highly social, and use loud whistles to communicate with one another, especially when alarmed.
